The Deinonychus is one of two dinosaurs you can play as in Survival Mode, and is the second to last carnivore to be unlocked.

Biology[]

Deinonychus, meaning "Terrible claw", is a maniraptoran dromaeosaurid dinosaur that lived in the Cretaceous Period 115-108 million years ago. These dinosaurs could grow up to 3.4 meters (11 ft) long. The skull was equipped with powerful jaws lined with around seventy curved, blade-like teeth. possessed large "hands" with three claws on each forelimb. The first digit was shortest and the second was longest. Each hind foot bore a sickle-shaped claw on the second digit, which was probably used during predation.

Life as a Deinonychus[]

The Deinonychus is the first size 5 non-DLC predator it is possible to unlock on the upper branch of the predator tree. The Deinonychus is on par with the fastest animals in the game and has very high base Stamina and Attack. While the Deinonychus has low base Life for its size, its biggest challenge is its low base Hunger, being among the lowest of any animal. Deinonychus needs constant feeding, but its quick, devastating attacks are equally as useful in both chasing down prey or breaking a foe's defense in open combat. While it is a powerful animal, it can still be overwhelmed by larger groups of adversaries due to its low base life, and the player should try not to overestimate how much it can take on.

Unique Challenges:[]

  • Claim the Dilophosaurus's territory - Unlocks Dilophosaurus
  • Complete all B challenges - Rewards Snake

Deinonychus as Prey[]

While very rare to spot early on outside of Events or the Underground Facility , after the 61st year the Deinonychus will become extremely common throughout almost all territories, with the only break being the Sewer. Most animals must think fast to avoid the Deinonychus, as its speed makes it very difficult to simply outrun. Smaller animals can take advantage of its size by ducking into areas it simply cannot follow, while larger, slower ones might be forced to face it down or risk drawing more attention. Despite its size, the Deinonychus's defense can be broken quickly by larger animals, opening it up to critical hits. This can be risky however, as its own quick attacks will inflict great damage and can knock down animals with ease. Deinonychus have the special enemy skill Pack Call, which will allow them to call in more Deinonychus as reinforcements if they spot a target. If they do intend to call, it's best to take out the Deinonychus before it can finish.
